Definition of fixed assets (FA)

fixed assets (FA)
1. Assets that are not consumed or changed into money during the current accounting period. Such assets can include machinery, land, buildings, or property used to operate a business.

  • accounting period (AP)   The time period used in a set of accounting books or financial statements, often 12 months.
  • asset   Anything of monetary value that is owned by a person. Assets include real property, personal property, and enforceable claims against others including bank accounts, stocks, mutual funds, and so on.
  • capital assets   Items that you own for investment or personal purposes, such as stocks, bonds or stamp collections. When you sell a capital asset, depending on the price you earn a capital gain or a capital loss. Gains are taxed at a special rate, and losses can be used in many cases to reduce the amount that is taxed. See also "Capital Gain" or "Capital Loss."
  • capital investments   Money used to purchase permanent fixed assets for a business, such as machinery, land or buildings as opposed to day-to-day operating expenses.
  • original cost of fixed assets (OCFA)
  • real estate (RE)   A section of land including all the natural resources (above and below the surface) and any permanent buildings or structures located on it. Also known as "realty."
  • real property   Permanent, non-movable property, such as land and buildings.
  • tangible fixed assets (TFA)
  • total fixed assets (TFA)
